Vrindavan (the Brindabon of early records) is a temple city on the Yamuna in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, one of the holiest centres of Krishna devotion, thronged with shrines and pilgrims. It lay beside Mathura on the great river route of the doab. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a post town, and its pre-1854 markings trace the mail of the Braj country.
