Azamgarh (the Azirnghur of early records) is a city in eastern Uttar Pradesh between the Tons and Ghaghara rivers, headquarters of Azamgarh district and a centre of weaving and the old Purvanchal country. It lay on the routes toward Banaras and the Ghaghara plain. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a district post town, and its pre-1854 markings record the mail of the eastern doab.
