Description

India, Tranquebar, 1848, "TRANQUEBAR PAID" Red Boxed Datestamp (Giles 4). Clear strike in red with manuscript "8 August 48" date and "1as" rate added on back of folded cover to "Collector of Tanjore" in Negapatam, cover has been completely silked to prevent further damage from insect holes, a few which just affect postal marking, still Very Fine appearance, a scarce strike of the ex-Danish territorial cancel, Tranquebar was predominately a Danish territory from 1620 (British from 1801-04) but was sold to the British in 1845
