Tinnevelly
Tirunelveli, long written Tinnevelly, is a major city in southern Tamil Nadu on the Thamirabarani river, an ancient temple city and the headquarters of Tirunelveli district in the far south of the peninsula. A centre of trade, cotton and learning, it was an important district town of the Madras Presidency. Its pre-1854 postal markings document the overland mail of the southern Tamil country.
