Description

India, Tellicherry, 1843, "TELLICHERY/Paid" Framed Handstamp (Giles 5). Bold strike in red (slightly oxidized) with manuscript "24 November 43" date and rate markings added on back of folded letter datelined "Mahe le 24 Novembre 1843" , addressed to Bordeaux, France, sender's directive "Via Egypte & Marseille" , faint red "INDIA" in oval handstamp, red French entry transit and Bordeaux (Jan. 4, 1844) arrival datestamps, manuscript "12" rate marking, Very Fine, Mahe was part of French India and is an exceptional rare origin as, according to official records from 1850, the entire population of European settlers amounted to just 17 individuals (out of a total population of 3,312)
