1834 Tanjore – London entire, with Tanjore Giles 3 "TANJORE/POST PAID" despatch handstamp, date "The 9th April 1834" & rate "Inland Post Paid to Madras As 7" (sender paid 7A, comprising 5A inland postage for distance between 200 to 250 miles for letter not exceeding 1 Tolah in weight, distance of Tanjore to Madras was 212 miles, & 2A outward ship postage) applied in manuscript. At Madras, Giles SD11 "OUT STATION/MADRAS/12 AP 12/1834/SHIP LETTER" transit & MX4 "MADRAS/12 AP 12/1834" receipt mark applied, sent bearing to the UK from India through the Cape route, entered the UK through Brighton port & there "INDIA LETTER/BRIGHTON" transit applied & sent to London, there "C/4 DE 4/1834" receipt mark & "1/8" (1s8d comprising 1s4d double-letter inland postage for Brighton–London transit + 4d India rate incoming sea postage) applied, which was collected from the recipient.
