Description
Tanjore, 1819, "Tanjore" Handstamp (Giles 1). Well-struck straightline handstamp with manuscript "free 1st June 1819" on flap of folded cover "To the Resident at Mysore" , additional "Passport Service" and signed "W. Blackburn", cover with some edge wear and tear from opening thru manuscript date, otherwise Very Fine strike of this ex-territorial marking which Giles states is rare and later than he was aware of (1796-97), a cover worthy of further research, especially as William Blackburn was the head of the Council of Superintendence which administered the state of Pudukkottai while the raja was a minor
