1827 Paris – Pondicherry – Delhi via Madras & Calcutta entire, received at Pondicherry port unpaid (likely privately carried), stamped with Pondicherry Giles 6 "PONDICHERRY/POST NOT PAID" bearing hand stamp, date "29 Jany. 1827" & bearing rate "4As S. Postage/5A Ind. Do/9", indicating 4A sea postage (as received at port) & 5A inland postage for Pondicherry to Madras, applied in manuscript. Sent to Madras, where Giles MX4 "MADRAS/31 JA 31/1827" receipt mark & Giles 12 "MADRAS/GPO/31 JA 31/1827/BEARING POSTAGE/" despatch mark were applied. Sent to Calcutta via Kedgree; at Calcutta, Giles G8 "CALCUTTA/GPO/12 FEB 12/1827" & "AM" receipt marks were applied. Sent to Delhi after applying Giles 16 "G.P.O./Feby./Bg Pg" despatch bearing hand stamp, date "12" & rate "1–5" (indicating 5A inland postage from Kedgree to Calcutta, no sea postage as the letter was forwarded from the Madras Presidency, & 1R inland postage from Calcutta to Delhi) applied in manuscript. All of the rates were valid for a letter not exceeding 1 tolah (1st weight step).
