Description

MANGALORE/DATE/FREE. 1838 : H.G. 4 : MANGALORE of south Kanara Dist., was captured by the East India Company in 1781 but surrendered to Tipu Sultan, after a heroic defense by Col. Campbell. It was recaptured in 1799. This handstamp, a Ex. Giles cover, bears pink Mangalore/Free despatch stamp, date 1838 July 15.
