Description

India, 1854, 1a Deep Red, Die I (4a; SG 11). Two singles in distinctly different shades, margins to touching, tied by barred "24" cancels on blue 1859 folded cover to Lohn, Switzerland, sender's directive "overland via france", red framed "MANGALORE, 185(9) June 13/Paid" despatch datestamp (Giles 3) on back, red Bombay (Jun. 20) and other French transit and faint arrival datestamps, variously rated, mild horizontal bend just affecting top of stamps, still Very Fine, an interesting use which only paid overland mail rate to Bombay and a particularly late use for the Lithograph issue, Switzerland is a scarce destination for the 1854 Lithograph issue
