Description

Spink - 1855 (24 Sept.) neat native envelope to Calcutta bearing 1/za. (cut-into at foot) tied by a diamond of dots and showing, on reverse, a fine strike of the rare boxed "Karikal/Paid" in red with date"24 9 55". A fine exhibition item. Photo Siegel - India, (French Settlement), Karikal, 1854, ½a Blue, Die I (2; SG 2). Large margins to in at bottom, tied by diamond of dots cancel on petite native cover to Madras, red framed "KARICAL/Paid" handstamp (Giles 1) with manuscript "24 9 55" (Sep. 24, 1855) date added on back, red framed "PM" handstamp, red Madras (Sep. 28) arrival backstamp, despatch datestamp affected by opening and small piece missing at bottom of front panel VERY FINE AND EXCEPTIONALLY RARE USE OF THE 1854 HALF-ANNA LITHOGRAPH ON COVER FROM THE FRENCH SETTLEMENT OF KARIKAL. The India Lithograph issue used from any of the French Settlements in India is scarce, but those from places other than Pondicherry are exceptionally rare.
