Description

Siegel - Gooty, 1809, "POSTPAID/GOOTY" Handstamp (Giles 1). Bold strike on flap of folded cover (missing side flap) with docketing indicating Jun. 21, 1809 despatch, addressed to Registrar of the Supreme Court in Madras, cover with slight ink erosion and soiling, still Very Fine strike, this is the only recorded example of this marking per Giles, ex Manning Cavendish - GOOTY - THE ONLY KNOWN(?) PRE-1839 MARK - 2-LINE OVAL-FRAMED “POST PAID/GOOTY” COVER TO MADRAS; 16 June 1809 long E (some wear and folded down) to Madras with a vert fine rare “POST PAID/GOOTY” (HG Type 1; “1 example recorded”) on the flap endorsed “w[eighin?]g 2 oz. Packet 60 fan[am]s” with date on lower flap. One of the rarest pre-1830 Indian markings. PHOTO - see page 31.
