This post office appeared in the 1854 list, but thereafter appears to have ceased to exist. CARANGOOLY/POST PAID in capsule box applied at time of despatch, postage of As. 3 prepaid to MADRAS. OUTSTATION SHIP LETTER mark of MADRAS and MADRAS/Date receipt mark applied. On arrival in ENGLAND, port receipt stamp DARTMOUTH/INDIA LETTER added. Sea postage 1/4d payable.

This 2 January 1835 pre stamp cover of British India bears the Carangooly HG 1 handstamp of the Madras Presidency, a mark graded “Scarce” in this census — the only surviving cover with this mark recorded so far. It has appeared at auction with Spink, Giles, lot 321, (Oct. 2000); Spink, lot 209, (Oct. 2001).
