INDIA: 1839-1902 range inc. 1839 EL ex Bellary to Madeira endorsed "via England" with very fine double oval "OUT STATION/MADRAS/28 MR 28/1839/SHIP LETTER" across flap and "[Detai]ned for Postage" & fine boxed "Returned for/Postage" hs's, scorched on arrival at The Motherbank, Portsmouth; 1835 EL ex Madras to France slit for fumigation with faint scarce "Purifee [?]/de Tromploup"; 1897 PC with contents "Just heard that all vessels out of India is stopped owing to plague & famine..."; plus other PCs with contents regarding epidemics or sanitation (7), PPCs of quarantine stations/hospitals (16), a bundle of modern unused postal stationery with printed messages regarding malaria/fever (30), documents/notice from or about quarantine (3).
