Ahtoor
Attur (the Ahtoor of early postal records) is a town in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, lying in the valley of the Vasishta river beneath the Chitteri and Kalrayan hills. Long a taluk headquarters, it was known for its fort and as a market town on the routes between Salem and the Coromandel plain. Under the Madras Presidency it served as a mofussil post town, and its pre-1854 handstamps record the Company's mail across the southern Tamil country.
