"SEGVRA" Handstamp. Well-struck straightline and "GOA/P.P." boxed handstamp in red on back of registered folded letter datelined May 18, 1855 and addressed to Lisbon, Portugal, manuscript "Pagou 120 reis" prepaid rate and "N. 34" registery number, "POR ALEXANDRIA" and "120" rate handstamps, interior pages with heavy ink erosion with outer sheet mostly unaffected VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THREE KNOWN REGISTERED COVERS FROM PORTUGUESE INDIA DURING THE PRE-STAMP PERIOD--TWO HAVE THE "SEGVRA" STRAIGHTLINE. Registered covers from any of the Portuguese Colonies are rare during the pre-stamp period, not just Portuguese India. Only three from Portuguese India are known. Along with the negative oval offered in lot 293, there are two with the "SEGVA" straightline--the cover offered here and another dated Oct. 24, 1848. Both registered covers in the Magnolia collection are illustrated in Barreiros "Portuguese India: Postal History and the First Issues", p. 55.
