PORTUGUESE INDIA, "P.P. GOA" Handstamp. Red two-line handstamp on top flap of Feb. 18, 1842 folded official cover with manuscript "No. 123" from the Queen of Sundem to Queen Maria II in Lisbon, Portugal, manuscript "Da sua Prima a Rainha de Sundem Senior" and "S.N. e R." indicating official correspondence, blue "Por Alexandria" handstamp and rated "300" reis, Lisbon (Apr. 10) arrival backstamp, cover with few insect holes and slight toning FINE AND EXCEPTIONAL COVER SENT FROM THE QUEEN OF SUNDEM TO QUEEN MARIA II OF PORTUGAL IN LISBON. Sundem was a small feudal state within the area of Portuguese Goa. The recipient, Queen Maria II (1819-1853), reigned from 1826 to 1828 and 1834 to 1853. She was deposed for a period of six years by her uncle, who happened to also be her fiance and regent (as she was nine years old). She was well known for policies focusing on public health and education.
