Description

"Segura" Negative Oval Handstamp. Clear cursive "Segura" negative oval and "GOA P.P." boxed handstamps in red on back of registered folded letter datelined "Nova Goa" Aug. 2, 1866 and addressed to Lisbon, Portugal, manuscript "Pagou 150 reis" prepaid rate and "Registada No. 630", "POR ALEXANDRIA" and "FRANCA" handstamps, Lisbon arrival datestamp, top flap with opening tear extending into Segura handstamp VERY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED REGISTERED COVERS FROM PORTUGUESE INDIA DURING THE PRE-STAMP PERIOD--THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE RARE "SEGURA" NEGATIVE OVAL. Registered covers from any of the Portuguese Colonies are rare during the pre-stamp period, not just Portuguese India. Only three are known for Portuguese India. Along with the cover offered here, there are two with the "SEGVA" straightline--one offered in lot 285 and another dated Oct. 24, 1848. Both covers in the Magnolia collection are illustrated in Barreiros Portuguese India: Postal History and the First Issues, p. 55.
