Description
Burma, 1836 "Akyab Post Paid, 18" Boxed Handstamp. Mostly complete strike in black on back of folded letter datelined Kyouk Phyoo Aug. 17, 1836, and addressed to Calcutta, sender's directive "via Akyab & Chittagong, Post Post 10 annas", red boxed "PM" handstamp, red Calcutta Sep. 2 arrival datestamp on back VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE INCREDIBLY RARE "AKYAB POST PAID" BOXED HANDSTAMP. THIS IS THE EARLIER OF TWO RECORDED COVERS. The ex-Davis cover dated Dec. 1836 (lot 2006 in 1990 Christie's Robson Lowe auction) was described as the only recorded example on cover. Davis was aware of two other strikes on pieces only--the earliest dated 1834, the latest 1837.
