Description

1838 : H.G. 4: An example of a letter sent from SHOLAPORE in June 1838 to CALCUTTA, with postage bearing and marked in black with the "SHOLAPORE / Bearing" non-slide type of despatch stamp introduced under the 1837 Post Office Act. The distance from SHOLAPORE to CALCUTTA was 1184 miles, for which the postage due was 15 annas. The letter was despatched on the 29th June, and on arrival in CALCUTTA two weeks later, the receipt stamp "G.P.O. / 1838 Jul 13" wasadded in red ink.
