Description

India, Sheerghotty, 1828, "SHEERGHOTTY POST OFFICE" Double-Oval Handstamp (Giles 1). Faint but mostly legible strike with manuscript "10 May 1828" date marking on back of folded letter to Mossdale, Scotland, sender's directive "per first Ship" and "pr Norfolk" in another hand, red framed "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" (Robertson In.3) and framed "1/2" handstamps, Calcutta G.P.O. (May 15 with date slug inverted, Giles SD10), London (Nov. 17), and Ayr (Nov. 19) transit backstamps, manuscript rate markings, Fine and scarce, few examples of this Sheerghotty marking are recorded
