Description
1829 Sheerghotty – Kilmarnock entire via Calcutta & Cape route, with Sheerghotty Giles 1 "SHEERGHOTTY/POST OFFICE" despatch handstamp, date "24 Novr. 1829" & rate "PP 8" (8A single letter inland postage to Calcutta) applied in manuscript, later Giles SD9 "CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER/29 NO 29/1829" transit mark applied. Sent to the UK through the Cape route via the British Packet BOMBAY CASTLE, entered in the UK through Portsmouth port & there "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" transit handstamp applied & sent to London. "1/" (comprising 8d Portsmouth–London single letter inland postage + 4d India incoming sea postage) bearing postage applied, later at London it was obliterated & updated to "1/7" (comprising 14½d Portsmouth–Kilmarnock single letter inland postage + 4d India incoming sea postage + ½d Scottish wheel tax) bearing postage in manuscript, together with "½" d. Scottish wheel tax mark & "F/12 MR 12/1830" Chief Office transit mark applied. Bearing postage of 1s 7d was collected from the recipient at Kilmarnock.
