Description

India, Patna, 1837, "PATNA Pt FREE/18__" Circular Datestamp (Giles 6). Full and clear strike in red with manuscript "7 Nov (18)37" date added on back of folded cover from Lord Auckland to Lt. Col. Low in Lucknow, signed "Auckland" at bottom left, right side flap partially missing VERY FINE STRIKE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS POST FREE POSTAL MARKING FROM PATNA. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE SIGNED LORD AUCKLAND—THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF INDIA. PATNA/POONA - PATNA “POST PAID” + POONA “POST NOT PAID” OR “FREE” MARKS; 30 Nov. 1823 EL from “Barrackpore” to Calcutta with v. fine 2-ring “PATNA/POST PAID” (HG6) across the join on the reverse, 15 June 1833 EL from “Poona” to Mahableshwer” (redirected back to Poona) with mainly v. fine large encircled “POONA/POST NOT PAID” d.s. (HG2; “Scarce”) on the flap, and Sept. 1847 EL (old sellotape inside) to Sitara with v. fine red oval-framed “POONA/FREE” d.s. (HG11; signed by the Bishop of Bombay but written by someone else!).
