Description

1845 Off-Mud Point–Calcutta/Kolkata letter, written on board of SS Plymouth, off-Mud Point in Ghoramara Island of Sagar delta region of the mouth of river Ganga, offloaded and posted at Kedgeree/Khejuri at Western bank, opposite to Mud Point, from where it was sent to Calcutta/Kolkata by faster mail sloops. The letter has Giles 7 Bearing rectangular dispatch mark dt. 5 May 45 of Kedgeree/Khejuri, indicating 2A due for single letter from Kedgeree/Khejuri to Calcutta/Kolkata, Giles G14 (ex-CG21)/Lowe HS431 bipartite rectangular G.P.O. receipt mark dt. 1845 May. 5 in red of Calcutta/Kolkata GPO, apparently delivered on the next day. The letter was written by an American John S Parker to opium trader Rajkrishna Mitra.
