India, Houghly, ca. 1840s, "HOOGHLY/18__/Paid" Framed Handstamp (Giles 2). Clear strike in red on back of folded letter datelined Dec. 22 (without year), addressed to Captain Ouseley in Calcutta, Very Fine and scarce, during the late 18th and early 19th century, Houghly was the object of contention between the British and Dutch, it was occupied by the British from 1795, Dutch from 1814, and then ceded back to the British in 1825
