Description
Houghly, 1813, "HOUGHLY" Straightline Handstamp (Giles 1). Mostly complete strike on back of folded letter datelined Chinsurrah Aug. 24, 1813 and addressed to Aberdeen, Scotland, sender's directive "Per Countess of London" , "Addl 1/2" boxed handstamp, London transit and arrival datestamps, Fine and rare marking, during the late 18th and early 19th century, Houghly was the object of contention between the British and Dutch, it was occupied by the British from 1795, Dutch from 1814, and then ceded back to the British in 1825, therefore this cover originates during the British interim period just prior to the Dutch retaking control of the territory a year later
