INDIA HAND STRUCK POSTAGE STAMP CALCUTTA - SHIP LETTERS 1827 - 1837 In 1827, a special set of stamps was introduced tobe applied to all letters off-loaded at Kedgeree, Diamond Harbour or the New Anchorage, destined for Calcutta only, to which place letters would always bear the same rates of postage. These stamps included in their design the rates payable for both inland and ship postage, and provided for a total of both charges. The stamps also included in each case a figure in brackets, which ranged for(1) to (5), the numbers indicating whether the letter was (1) single, (2) double, (3) treble, (4) Quadruble or (5) Quintuble. The rates changed four times from 1827 to 1837 as follows:- 1827-29 Inld. Ptg. Ship Do. Single 5 2 Double 10 4 14 Treble 15 8 1/7 Quadruple 1/4 8 1/12 Quintuple 1/9 1/- 2/9 1.1.1830 - 14.11.1830.
