Description

India, Backergunge, 1847, "BAKERGUNJ/Paid" Framed Handstamp (Giles 2, 1993 Supplement). Mostly legible strike in red with manuscript "3 Sept. 1847" date and "1 A" rate added on back of cover to Corfu, Ionian Islands, sender's directive "By Steamer, care of Backworth & Co., Malta" , red framed "INDIA" and red framed "INDIA PAID" handstamps, Calcutta (Sept. 7) transit and Corfu (Oct. 10) arrival datestamps, various manuscript rate notations, cover with some soiling and toning, otherwise Fine, an exceptional destination, we presume this is the strike referenced in the Giles 1993 Supplement (which is spelled "Backergunge")
