Description

1st Afghan War 1842 (Dec 11): Entire letter headed "left bank of the Ravee (River)" and possibly near Lahore, from the Haughton correspondence to West Wickham, Kent struck with probably the finest strike recorded of the framed "AFIGHANISTAN / Postage Paid" handstamp struck in red at Ferozepore with date "12 Dec" and rate "12 as." inserted in manuscript, with the entire endorsed "per Overland Mail" and "Paid" in manuscript, oval "INDIA" in red and charge "2/8d." due upon delivery in Bromley with cds in black (Feb 6, 1843). Content suggests his return to England "I bore up against my aches and pains as long as I could, but am finding my arm getting worse...". Superb and very rare so fine.
